Another method is to use a liquid crystal display screen. LCD displays are widely used and easily connected to Stamps.
For example, the two line alphanumeric LCD display shown in the figure below can be purchased from Jameco (part number 150990)
and Parallax (part number 27910). Here is a typical LCD display screen, which is plugged into a breadboard for easy connection with other chips:
The advantages of this type of LCD display screen are:
One pin can drive the display. The display screen contains logic circuits that allow Stamp to communicate with itself in a serial manner,
so only one pin is needed. In addition, the SEROUT command in BASIC Stamp can easily achieve serial
communication and control the display screen is very simple.
LCD screens can display alphanumeric text, including letters and numbers, and even custom characters.
LCD displays have extremely low power consumption – only requiring 3 milliamps of current.
The only downside is that such a LCD screen costs $59. Obviously, no one would install such a display screen on an oven.
When designing an oven, such a display screen is usually used for sample testing first, and then a cheap display screen is
driven by a chip and software designed by oneself for the final product.
To drive such a display screen, you only need to provide a power supply of 5 volts or more and a ground wire (Stamp”s 9-volt
battery meets these two conditions), and then connect one of Stamp”s input-output pins to the display input line. The easiest way
I can find to connect the input and output pins of Stamp to devices like LCD screens is to use Jameco”s wiring tool (part number 34577)
and a 30 gauge connector (part number 22541). This does not require welding and the connection is sturdy and reliable.
